where do i get a skatebook? where can i find skatebook? how do I get a skatebook? what is a skatebook? answer all of these questions this thursday night at kcdc skateshop in brooklyn, ny from 6-9pm. there will be free tequila sampling by pura casta tequila company if you are 21 and over. also the party is definitely not sponsored by the brewery that is directly across the street. so our guess is that they are not a contender for the unofficial, official beer of skateboarding contest. kcdc is at 90 n. 11th street at wythe, williamsburg, brooklyn, new york. for more info call oops for a really good time call 718.397.9006

So I’m a little late jumping on the A1 Supercross opener bandwagon. Whatever! My good friend Toddy G and I spent the entire day at the races watching practice, eating out of the roach coach in the pits and geeking out on the sweet rides the factory’s dreamed up for the top racing stars of 2009. Was I surprised to see James Stewart on his head? Yes. Was I surprised that Chad Reed brought his A game. Not at all. I’m happy to report that it looks like it’s going to be a dogfight to the end. Halleluia!
Something you don’t see very often! Another racer passing Stewart and actually pulling away. Impressive.

Price and I went to see a special preview by the Hammer Museum of The Wrestler, directed and produced by Darren Aronofsky, starring Mickey Rourke. Afterward the Hammer hosted a Q&A with Aronofsky and Mickey. Mickey Rourke gave a stellar performance in the film and stated as a matter of fact that the credit for his performance was due to Darren’s direction and that instead of learning to wrestle for four months he’d rather be in Miami getting laid. Mickey discussed, how as a young actor with a passion for boxing and competition that he strived to be the best actor Hollywood has ever known, but quickly found out that in Hollywood being good at acting and being an A-lister were two totally different things. This knowledge assisted Rourke in his downward spiral of renegade carelessness, alcoholism and drug addiction. Mickey said that Darren was a “tough” director and that his toughness was key in assisting him to be the best he’s ever been in a film to date. Mickey went on to explain that by “tough” he didn’t mean to scare other actors away from working with Darren, because his toughness was not hard nosed, but more a sense of passion and dedication to produce the best film while encouraging actors under his direction to be their best. Darren talked about how it was difficult to find financing for the film because of Mickey’s past reputation. If my memory serves me correctly I believe the movie was made for around 10 million dollars. The sound track by Bruce Springsteen was a donation because of Mickey’s relationship with the boss and Axl Rose gave the rights to use a song off of Appetite for Destruction for 20k, which is supposedly unheard of. In this brief video clip Mickey talks about how he first discovered director, Darren Aronofsy and his perception of Aronofsky as a film maker, which compelled him to want to star in the film. Shortly after the Q&A started it became apparent that Mickey was appreciative of the opportunity to speak to the audience, but would rather wrap it up to go outside to suck on a Marlboro Red.

It’s December 13th, 2008. As the holidays approach and 2008 comes to a close; the last days through new years mark a time when race fans will twiddle their thumbs, waiting fervently in anticipation for the beginning of the Supercross season. As I reflect on years past with line ups on the starting gate including Ricky Carmichael, Kevin Windham, Chad Reed, Jeff Emig, Ezra Lusk, Sebastian Tortelli, David Vuillemin, James Stewart, and Jeremy McGrath, I can’t help but wonder what kind of season Anaheim 1 will usher in. In American Index Of The Hidden And Unfamiliar, Taryn Simon exposes the complexities of people, places, things and organizations that exist all around us everyday as we go along our merry way. Some of the most painfully plain images explode into life as the revelation of what your eyes are looking at is revealed in the subtext that accompanies the pictures. Part of the wonder is how a civilian photographer could even gain access to capture some of the images within the collection. A definite must see.

Me with Frank Hawley Multi-Time NHRA Drag Racing Funny Car Champion and World Class Instructor, September 25, 2008 Las Vegas Motor Speedway
When I decided to go to Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School, I had no idea what to expect. As a matter of fact I signed up at the very last minute so from the time I was accepted until the moment I got there I didn’t have much time to develop expectations. It was suggested that each student immerse him or herself in the procedures for driving the car, understanding where all the controls are and what they do, and to have it all memorized. That meant I had homework to do. Just the thought of school brought me back to the dreadful days of high school, where I would usually escape by imagining myself traveling around the world skateboarding new and undiscovered terrain. For a split second a similar thought of dread echoed in my brain as I contemplated what this experience was going to be like. Class started at 7:30am sharp on Wednesday and Thursday, September 24-25th at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Pictured here are two of my new pro models that were just released on Black Label. It’s quite humorous to me actually because besides giving Lucero, Shepard Fairey‘s phone number, I didn’t have much to do with these designs. When I first turned pro for Real Skateboards in 1991 and as well when I rode for Lance Mountain‘s company The Firm in the late 90′s I used to be involved with every aspect of the design of my boards. I’d say I was somewhat particular about my shapes and dimensions even down to 1/16 of an inch. I actually used to draw my own templates and submit ideas for graphics and sign off on the design and dimensions. Maybe that is one of the reasons that there is such a disconnect in the market for skaters who buy skateboards; they just aren’t personal anymore. I don’t mean to sound ungrateful, quite the contrary I’m grateful to have pro models out still, it’s just my opinion that if more pros actually took the time to be involved with the products that had their name on them that consumers would respond. I may be wrong. Anyway, the deck on the left is a graphic that Shepard Fairey did for me celebrating 20 years of the Black Label Elephant and the other one is a graphic adapted from Jason Adams Cadilac Ranch series of paintings.

The weather channel should name a hurricane after this kid, cause he just decimated and demolished the playing field. James Bubba Stewart does it! A perfect season! Not even RC showed the type of dominance displayed in his career, like what James Bubba Stewart displayed this past outdoor motocross season. Now that the season is over James Stewart becomes the 1st ever racer in the history of racing to win every major title. Not to mention according to the “AMA Toyota MX Laps Led” out of the 382 laps raced in the series, Stewart led 369 of them. Talk about dominant. Stewart‘s 2008 outdoor campaign will forever be remembered in the annuls of motocross history as a season littered with vision, determination, heart and commitment. Stewart has known since he was a child that he wanted to be dominant. As you can see in the photo James is an imaginative rider not limiting himself in any capacity. Stay tuned as James Stewart and the rest of Team America proceed to defend our title at the Motocross des Nations in England.

I finished reading the reluctant fundamentalist. Being an Iranian-American, I have to admit that there are parts of Moshin Hamid’s book that intrigued me; certain sentiments that hit home. On the other hand America has become somewhat of a cheap and easy target for critics over the past decade. What imperialist empire hasn’t had it’s fare share of criticizers? Quite frankly isn’t Islam the largest religion in the world? Would it be fare to say that Islam has invaded many of the nations where the people adopted it’s tenets? It’s safe to say that Iran is one of them. To this day I don’t understand why or how an entire country could be subjected to an alien paradigm. Must be fear of hell or the sword, I guess. I must admit that This was a hard book to put down due to Moshin’s writing style and the subject matter. Does America deserve the hate expressed in this novel? possibly. Then again if the USA shouldn’t be the most dominant influence in the world with regards to politics, economies, civil liberties, atrocities and the list goes on, then what country should be? Like it says in the book. Nothing lasts forever and time only moves in one direction. Worth reading.

For those of you who have ever thrown your leg over a dirtbike, we all know it’s a matter of if not when, that you’ll make it over the bars and onto your back. I’ve ridden motocross for years and skateboarded all my life. I can honestly say that motocross is the most physically demanding activity that I’ve ever tried. Not to mention it’s a sport that will have you healing for months after that one good get off. It takes being in top physical condition and mental health to get out there and burn laps around a track that is constantly changing as each rider makes his/her way around. James Stewart is defying reality this year. Thus far he’s had 18 perfect motos. Looks to me like someone is out to give RC’s records a run for their money.

I haven’t watched the race yet from Glen Helen, but by all accounts and observations I think his time has arrived. Price and I are staying here for the weekend in Palm Springs. Family, friends, hot tub, golf, Coachella. But besides that, I think this picture sums up why people love California. Maybe if I practice my golf game on the signature Jack Nicklaus course I’ll be able to give Koston and Gavin a run for their money.

We used to love to go to this park in Almaden, which was just down the street from my parents’ restaurant. Dennis used to pull out his jump ramp and we’d all proceed to jump to flat for hours and hours everyday. This photo is from the mid to late 80′s, probably taken by Tom Miller.

As one can see in this picture taken at the turn of the millennium, not only was Alan ripping the Visalia YMCA Skate Camp to pieces, he was also setting trends… checker board vans before you. This shot is way better than mine. Thanks, Dennis.

These might not be as cool as the latest greatest wheel to come out of the spitfire camp, however they are the only way you’ll get to experience the sheer pleasure of racing a camel down the start straight. Actually these wheels are out of production, so really they are just for your viewing pleasure. Camel Jockeys are signature wheels for Salman Agah – the president of the Iranian Skateboarders Association. Droppin’ Bombs since 1972. Don’t nuke me ’cause I’m Iranian!

This is quite possibly the worst photo of Alan Petersen ever taken because I don’t know how to use a camera. I captured this frontside invert of Alan’s at Visalia YMCA skatecamp several years ago. I feel quite sorry for those of you who have just taken up skateboarding in the past several years, because you missed out on ole Al. Alan’s ability on a skateboard is and was freakish: street, pools, ditches, vert ramps, whatever. No terrain is safe… Alan rips it all to pieces.
