Raymond Pettibon & Mark Gonzales Collaboration

Posted by Salman

We were in the side office over at Regen Projects visiting with some friends a couple of days ago when I spotted a Raymond Pettibon painting with a drawing in it that looked like something Mark Gonzales had made. Turns out it is a piece that the Gonz collaborated on with Pettibon. Pretty damn cool. Too bad Pettibon’s work is way out of my price range or I would have snatched it up. Below are images of the collaboration and a couple other paintings I took snap shots of. We probably viewed over 100 pieces total. It must have been our lucky day!  Thanks to Heather at Regen Projects!

Anish Kapoor At Regen Projects. Amazing!

Posted by Salman

When I first walked into the gallery, I immediately thought wow… what are these, photos? Then I took a couple steps closer to the images and realized that they are drawings on paper. My photos hardly ever convey the brilliance of most of the pieces that I see in various art exhibits, so do yourself a favor and check out Anish Kapoor’s work at Regen Projects (up until Feb. 28) for yourself. Simply fabulous!

Below are images I took of some other incredible works of art by Christian Jankowski, Glenn Ligon and Marilyn Minter. Thank you Shaun, Stacy and Heather!

Shirana Shahbazi At The Hammer Museum

Posted by Salman

Tehran, Iran born artist Shirana Shahbazi. The door on the bottom left of this image should give you an idea of the size and scale of this piece.

We also observed the Oranges and Sardines exhibit and the Gouge exhibit. Both exhibits are a must see. We especially enjoyed the woodcut prints in the Gouge exhibit.

Stencils Aren’t Art by Jason Adams at Hensley’s Pub

Posted by Salman

On January 30, 2009, legendary professional skateboarder and noted accordion-wielding front man for Flogging Molly, Matt Hensley, hosted an artshow titled Stencils Aren’t Art by San Jose’s finest Jason Adams. The show was also sponsored by Black Label Skateboards, Dekline Footwear and Pura Casta Tequila. Ceaser, the owner of Pura Casta, who also happens to farm the agave in Mexico, was on hand along with his right hand man, Ryan Quintana, to give out samples of Pura Casta to everyone present. A who’s who of skateboard industry friends and family showed up to support Jason as he continues to break into the art world and to snatch up some of his new works on wood and paper. The show will be up at Hensley’s Flying Elephant Pub & Grill for several weeks.  There are only a few pieces left for purchase, so hurry on down and stick a red dot next to your favorite piece because the work is priced to sell and going fast. The following morning Matt hosted The Blokes from noon to 3. Check out photos and the video of Matt jamming with The Blokes while patrons take turns dancing to the awesome Irish music.

10 limited edition decks were made by Black Label for Stencils Aren’t Art.

Simmons & Burke Personal Home Installation

Posted by Salman

Tonight our friends Case Simmons and Andrew Burke came over to install an artwork that Price acquired during her visit to Miami for Art Basel. Check out Kim Light’s Lightbox to see more of their astonishing collage work.

Simmons on the level, Burke eyeballing.

My photo of this collage sucks, you’ll just have to come over to see it in person or get your own at Kim Light. This series comes in additions of 5 or 6.

Christoph Schmidberger’s I Feel Nothing

Posted by Salman

Last night kicked off our dear friend Christoph Schmidberger’s show at Patrick Painter Gallery on Melrose. It’s difficult to capture the detail of these drawings done with pencil on paper on camera. It’s a must see show if you live in LA or are visiting LA. Several of Christoph’s muses include fabulous friends of ours and there is also a drawing of Price, my wife which turned out quite lovely. The show is up until Feb 28th, 2009. To learn more about Christoph and his artwork please check out his website.
